Hopper’s Cafe

Edward Hopper is arguably one of the most iconic painters of the 20th century. I have always connected with his artwork. The loneliness and liminal atmosphere in his paintings are timeless and speak to a core human desire.

Last year I was working on a movie where we spent some time on a back lot, which is essentially a small piece of a city that can be used for various streets, etc., without traveling there. The buildings are “empty” and faceless. At one end of the street was a café-type building with no signs or designation to it.

As the sun set and created long streaks of light and shadow, I felt like I was in a Hopper painting— empty streets lit with a sad, warm light. This was the beginning of my idea to do an homage to the painter and the feelings he evokes.
