As I drive around Los Angeles I often see discarded furniture that has been placed at the sidewalk edge. Generally it is not to litter the street but rather to up-cycle the furniture to someone who could use it in their own lives.

I am attracted to this idea for several reasons. I love to up cycle - it’s less stuff that ends up in the garbage. The idea that there is an unwritten “code” that if you place a piece of furniture out in front of your house it becomes an impromptu marketplace where it may very well disappear with in the hour. It also speaks to a human aspect, where you get to see a little bit of someone’s life anonymously put out in public for all to see.

I can’t remember if it was these chairs exactly when I came across this scene several years ago, but I love the idea of lawn furniture placed out front of a house with what seems like intention to relax on them and watch the world go by.
